“Feminism directly confronts the idea that one person or set of people [has] the right to impose definitions of reality on others.” -Liz Stanley and Sue Wise
Welcome to It Starts With Me, a place dedicated to meaningful dialogue around the intersection of different oppressions and their relationship to systems of power and privilege. Feminism is the lens through which I try to understand the world around me, and my place in it as a complex human being. This blog will follow the process of understanding myself as both oppressed AND oppressor; it was Paulo Freire who said that in the act of oppressing others, we lose our own humanity. So while I am exploring my own and learning about others’ identities, I do (frequently) stumble over my own privilege.
I could write a laundry list of my identities but you will discover them anyway. I talk about the ways that personal and social identities, and relationships, are influenced by systems of power and privilege. My passion will always lie with teaching and organizing as forms of protest, and writing is another way I’m trying to discover my own voice. I didn’t invent any of this stuff; I believe we all have a responsibility to shape the culture and reality we live in, and this is just me drawing connections between theory and practice, while trying to understand myself in the process. So welcome!
